The Florida League of Cities (FLC), representing the collective interests of Florida’s municipal governments, recently honored Sebastian City Council Member Ed Dodd with the 2023 Home Rule Hero Award.
This accolade recognizes his dedicated advocacy during the 2023 Legislative Session. Dodd’s persistent efforts were pivotal in amplifying the importance of local autonomy, safeguarding the Home Rule powers of Florida’s cities, and pushing forward the League’s legislative goals.
Home Rule emphasizes the city’s autonomy to devise local solutions to local issues with minimal intrusion from the state. Those receiving the Home Rule Hero Award, elected and non-elected officials, have shown dedication in offering a local perspective to the Legislature, as per the League’s call.
Dodd is set to extend his advocacy for local governance by retaining his seat on the Florida League of Cities Board of Directors for another year. This position ensures that he can highlight the adverse effects of preemptions, assisting cities and towns in self-governing based on their community’s unique needs, backed by a board comprised of members from across Florida.
Since local government is the closest to its citizens, Sebastian is privileged to have Council Member Dodd at the forefront.
