Sebastian residents and visitors could soon have a new option for air travel as St. Lucie County is launching commercial passenger service at Treasure Coast International Airport, with the first flights taking off within the next year, officials say.
A crucial step towards this goal is imminent, as the county is weeks away from obtaining its Part 139 certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certification is essential for airports that accommodate commercial air carriers.
St. Lucie County Commission Chairwoman Cathy Townsend said once the county has the 139 certification, they will be open for business.
The county is currently in negotiations with at least two airlines, including a budget carrier. Additionally, a pilot training facility in partnership with American Airlines is under construction at the airport.
To accommodate passenger needs, the airport will undergo renovations to expand seating and baggage areas.
The potential for commercial flights has generated excitement among local businesses in Sebastian and the Treasure Coast as they believe increased air accessibility would significantly boost tourism.
Currently, most guests in Sebastian arrive via West Palm Beach, Melbourne, or Orlando airports, requiring an extended drive.
Should commercial flights become a reality, Treasure Coast International Airport would join Vero Beach Regional Airport as the second commercial airport between Melbourne and West Palm Beach.
Breeze Airways began offering passenger service in Vero Beach in early 2023.
The development of commercial air service at Treasure Coast International Airport is expected to boost the local economy and improve regional access.
