The Marine Resources Council (MRC) is excited to announce the launch of a brand new, interactive 2024 Indian River Lagoon (IRL) Report on LoveTheIRL.org, available on Monday, November 18th, 2024.
Designed with accessibility and community engagement in mind, this report takes a comprehensive look at the Lagoon’s health.
Laura Wilson, MRC Executive Director, explains, “The new report approach grew out of insights gained during the 21st Indian River Lagoon Action Assembly held this July at Florida Institute of Technology.”
The report utilizes the latest data collected across the entire Lagoon by eight different organizations, spanning August 2023 to August 2024. Collaboration details are included within the online report.
A Detailed Picture of the Lagoon’s Health
This innovative report offers a cumulative health assessment for each of the five basins within the 156-mile Lagoon, alongside individual assessments for specific categories. Data is presented in a user-friendly digital dashboard with clear, informative graphics and maps. Each basin’s health is categorized as good, okay, poor, or very poor for the following factors:
- Sediment health
- Water quality
- Harmful algal blooms
- Seagrass coverage
- Wastewater spills
This expands upon the previous Indian River Lagoon Report Card, which focused solely on water quality and seagrass health.
“The 2024 IRL Report provides a more holistic perspective,” says MRC Director of Science, Mara Skadden. “Our goal is to inform and engage the entire community, while also guiding future conservation efforts across the Lagoon ecosystem.”
Showcasing Collaborative Efforts for a Healthy Future
The report also highlights ongoing projects undertaken by government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders, all dedicated to protecting and restoring the Lagoon.
For over 40 years, the MRC has been a champion for the IRL coastal community in east central Florida, working tirelessly to protect, restore, unite, and promote its well-being. Visit LoveTheIRL.org for more information.
