This month, a local Scouts BSA group– consisting of six pre-teen girls – set out to conduct a “Courtyard Cleanup” for the Sebastian River Medical Center, a local Steward Family Hospital.
Inspired by the idea to create a calm and soothing space for patients at the hospital, the six troopers spent the first day of the cleanup weeding and pruning the hospital’s courtyard – filling 18 full-sized contractor trash bags with weeds and brush.
The second day of the project was spent pressure washing the walkways and laying down 58 bags of mulch and 10 bags of stones. The finished product is a serene, lush, green, and beautifully maintained outdoor space – which will indeed offer patients and visitors pockets of peace for years to come.
The troop behind the “Courtyard Cleanup,” Troop 4545, officially formed in February 2023 as part of Scouts BSA – formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America.
The local Sebastian group currently consists of six female troopers, who can remain in the troop until they turn 18 – after which many of the members aspire to become Eagle Scouts. Six additional members from a local Cub Scouts troop will be joining the group in March.
The troop members were eager to give back to the community. After searching for the ideal service project for a few weeks, they came across the Sebastian River Medical Center’s courtyard. Given their vast experience with outdoor activities through the Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA, sprucing up the hospital’s meditation garden was the perfect fit.
Moving forward, the troopers plan to continue to make frequent visits to the hospital to care for the meditation courtyard, ensuring that patients and their loved ones can continue to enjoy a peaceful, well-maintained outdoor space.
The local Sebastian Scouts BSA group meets every Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church, 901 Clearmont St., Sebastian, FL 32958.
Troop members must be in 6th grade or at least 11 years old, and they can remain in the club until they are 18. If you would like more information or would like to join the troop, please visit their Facebook page, BSA Girl Troop 4545 or email bsatroop4545@gmail.com.
