The Detachment of Florida Sons of The American Legion has named Past Commander Peter Puzzo as their Member of the Year for 2024, marking his second honor after a similar accolade in 2020.
This recognition comes as a testament to his profound impact on veterans, the Sebastian community, and young minds across Indian River County.
Puzzo has been commended for his exceptional and selfless efforts in supporting veterans and promoting American values. His initiative, “Veterans in the Classroom,” educates students in grades 2 through 8 about the importance of patriotism and public service.
He also leads the “Operation: Remember Our Heroes” program, which he started in 2014, offering free meals to veterans on significant days such as Purple Heart Recognition Day, Vietnam Veterans Day, and Medal of Honor Day. His dedication extends to his role with the Sebastian Area Veterans Honor Guard.
Beyond his educational and ceremonial contributions, Puzzo is deeply involved in preserving the memory of fallen heroes. He oversees the flagging and marking of 1,050 veterans’ gravesites biannually across cemeteries in Fellsmere, Sebastian, and Winter Beach.
His commitment to honoring veterans further manifests in his role in fundraising and designing significant monuments in the community. He spearheaded the creation of the POW-MIA Monument in Riverview Park and has been instrumental in the upcoming unveiling of the Gold Star Family Monument, also located in the park.
In addition to these local efforts, Puzzo plays a critical role at the state level, where he leads Training and Development for the Florida Sons of The American Legion, ensuring that the organization’s members are well-prepared to serve their communities and champion the values of the Legion.
Puzzo’s recognition as Member of the Year highlights his enduring dedication to service and his impactful contributions to veterans and community members alike in Sebastian, Indian River County, and beyond.
