On Saturday, January 13, 2024, around 4:40 p.m., a concerned individual alerted the police about their non-responsive grandparents.
Officers Eric Antosia and Ben Buffington with the Sebastian Police Department responded to the 700 block of Barker Street, where they discovered two elderly individuals and a dog, all unconscious.
The police officers entered the residence and carefully relocated the elderly woman, man, and their dog to the outside. They, along with the couple’s granddaughter, began performing CPR on the grandparents and dog. Emergency medical services arrived promptly to offer medical assistance.
The person who dialed 911 stated that they had a phone conversation with their grandparents at approximately 4 p.m. About 20 minutes later, they reached the grandparents’ residence. Upon receiving no response at the front door and their calls going unanswered, the granddaughter entered the rear of the house and discovered the grandparents and their dog unconscious.
The Fire Department found a vehicle running in the garage. It is believed that the vehicle’s operation with the garage door closed led to carbon monoxide leaking into the house.
The couple was transported to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, including their dog. Officers Eric Antosia and Ben Buffington were also taken to the hospital for evaluation and were subsequently medically cleared.
