Every year, the EL-DOES of Sebastian Elks Lodge 2714 award graduating students at Sebastian River High School with scholarships toward their college education.
This year was no exception as Debbie Lawrence, EL-DOES Parliamentarian, presented $1000 scholarship awards each to Lillian Greene, Marian Vu, and Roberto Gamez Jr. of Sebastian River High School.
Students are required to submit an application for the scholarship and to provide specific information including an essay describing their goals and aspirations for their college education and beyond. A committee of EL-DOES reviews and discusses the applications and selects students based upon defined criteria.
This is a time consuming process as each application is carefully reviewed by each Committee member. The EL-DOES take this process and the applications very seriously and spend a good deal of time reviewing and discussing applicant submissions.
Often decisions are difficult as there are so many deserving students. This year, 36 students submitted applications and three were chosen.
Throughout the year the EL-DOES work hard to plan and host numerous events to raise funds in order to support the various community programs and charities they champion. And they do a great job as virtually every event hosts a sold-out crowd!
Student scholarships are among the programs EL-DOES care greatly about. Others include: the Children’s Therapy Services of FL, the Youth Camp in Umatilla, FL, the Ecumenical Food Bank and the Veteran’s Services in Sebastian, FL, as well as numerous other youth-centered activities.
