Sebastian River High School wrestler Claire Betz won first place at the 120 lb girls district championship for 1A D13 and is heading to regionals next week in Wellington, where the top four will move to the state championship.
In October of 2021, Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) voted to make girls wrestling a sanctioned high school sport for the 2021-2022 school year. Creating a separate, standalone girl’s individual bracket tournament will allow female grapplers a chance to compete against other girls.
The SRHS junior has been wrestling at SRHS for the last three years as the only female. Last summer, she attended 3 camps, one of which was the wrestle like a girl camp at the University of Iowa. Professional title of Indian River sponsored her flight to the camp.
Claire has wrestled boys primarily, and she is excited to show off her talent now getting to compete against girls. She is currently ranked 19 in the 125-pound weight class.
