On Saturday, a fun day out on the water took a turn for the worse for two teenagers boating near the Sebastian Yacht Club in Sebastian, Florida.
Initial reports on social media inaccurately placed the accident near Captain Hirams Resort, stating four teenagers were in the boat. The incident actually took place between the Sebastian Yacht Club and Mulligans Beach House Restaurant with two onboard.
According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, a boating accident involving a small vessel and resulted in one of them being airlifted to Holmes Regional Hospital with serious injuries.
The accident occurred when a wake from another passing vessel struck the 13–15-foot boat the teens were on. The force of the wake caused a 16-year-old girl to be thrown overboard and into the path of their boat’s propeller, leading to severe injuries.
Eyewitnesses to the accident quickly responded, with a nearby boat rushing to the scene to assist. The injured 16-year-old received immediate attention at Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she is currently receiving care.
