The Sebastian community is invited to a special ceremony on Sunday, August 11th, at 11:00 a.m., to witness the unveiling of a new Gold Star Family Monument in Riverview Park Veterans Memorial Circle.
This collaborative effort between Squadron 189 Sons of The American Legion, Family Groups of American Legion Post 189, VFW Post 189, and the Sebastian Area Veterans Honor Guard serves as a permanent tribute to the families of fallen service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
The unveiling ceremony will be a brief public event offering residents the opportunity to view the monument for the first time and learn about its significance.
A formal dedication ceremony for the Gold Star Family Monument will follow on September 29th, coinciding with the next Gold Star Family Day.
Shedding Light on the Gold Star Family Monument
The Gold Star Family Monument stands as a powerful symbol of tribute to families who have endured the unimaginable loss of a loved one in service to our country. The term has roots in World War I, where families displayed blue stars in their windows for each serving member. If a service member died in service, the blue star was replaced with a gold star, giving rise to this enduring symbol.
The monument’s design embodies these families’ profound sacrifices and unwavering strength. Often, inscriptions, plaques, and symbolic elements weave a narrative of their enduring commitment and the ultimate sacrifice made by their fallen loved ones. While specific designs may vary by location, the core message remains constant – one of deep respect, remembrance, and enduring gratitude.
These monuments, with their enduring presence, offer a dedicated space for reflection and remembrance for Gold Star Families and the entire community. They serve as a constant reminder of the human cost of service, fostering a sense of shared respect and appreciation for the sacrifices made by these families.
