After announcing their wedding plans last year, several people wanted to know more about Arlo Guthrie’s new wife. The two married on Dec. 8, 2021.
Sebastian Daily sat down and talked with the newlyweds a few times since they returned to the Sebastian area. But many people want to know more about Marti Ladd, who married Guthrie.
She’s pleasant to be around, funny, quick-witted, and we recently learned more about her career. During the 1990s, she purchased a property in New York, turned it into a B&B, and named it The Wild Rose Inn. Ladd later sold it in September 2016.
“I bought a dilapidated 1898 Victorian apartment house and created a B&B in the center of the village of Woodstock, New York called The Wild Rose Inn. My great-grandparents had a Jewish boarding house in Saratoga Springs in the 1920s, next door to a casino owned by Lucky Luciano. I was a fifth-generation Innkeeper dating back to Ukraine in the 1800s,” Ladd told Sebastian Daily.
In May 2001, Ladd’s neighbor Happy Traum, a veteran folk musician, booked a reservation for Arlo Guthrie at The Wild Rose Inn. She said she recognized his name but didn’t know what he looked like until he walked through the front door.
Ladd’s friendship with Guthrie developed into a relationship when his wife Jackie passed away. It’s the second marriage for both of them.
Many famous people stayed at Ladd’s Inn, and the hallways were filled with autographed photos of her notable guests. She said the list was long and colorful. Some of the names included Jessica Lang, Chevy Chase, Woody Harrelson, Quentin Tarantino, Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke, Norman Reedus, and Rosie Perez, to name a few.
Ladd also published a few recipe books. I typed her name on Amazon and found a variety of recipe books.
“My favorite collection is ‘Everything Chocolate’ with my mother’s recipe for hot fudge called ‘Mom’s Remedy for the Blues,'” Ladd told us.
She said copies of the original recipe books are now hard to come by. Still, she created three Kindle format e-books entitled “Nothing But Chocolate,” “Basically Brunch,” and “Catch O’ the Day” that are available through Amazon and are free to Kindle Unlimited members.
We asked Ladd what it’s like to live with a legendary singer and songwriter.
“He’s my constant companion in all things. We plant and tend a vegetable garden in the summer, making our own ketchup, pesto, pickles, and sun-dried tomatoes. We have a large library of cookbooks, and Arlo likes to choose many dishes that I’m game to try,” Ladd said.
We asked her to tell us the most fun she’s had with Guthrie.
“The most fun I’ve had with Arlo was dressing up for the Coney Island Mermaid Day Parade in 2019,” she said.
The two make great companions and seem very happy as they settle back into the Sebastian area.
