The Mayor of Sebastian, Fred Jones, was nearly hit by an erratically driven SUV while on his way to a golf game last Sunday morning. The driver proceeded towards the Sebastian Municipal Airport, parking in the middle of the road.
Mayor Jones reported the vehicle’s reckless movements and direction to the Sebastian Police Department, making a 911 call.
“I observed the SUV veering aimlessly in the grass, even hitting a parking curb,” Jones told Sebastian Daily.
On arrival, police officers found the SUV parked diagonally across a parking space, blaring music from within, and a man, Shane Allen of Sebastian, seated at the wheel.
Officers noted Allen’s swaying demeanor, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech when they approached him for a conversation.
The police report reveals that Allen was reluctant to comply with the officer’s commands to switch off the SUV and step outside. Eventually, he did so but had to lean on his vehicle for support.
Allen nearly collapsed when asked to stand without support, forcing the officer to catch him. The police could identify a distinct smell of alcohol on his breath.
He admitted to police that he had three cocktails an hour earlier following a spat with his girlfriend.
Given the severity of Allen’s visible impairment, police deemed it unsafe to administer field sobriety tests.
A half-empty 750ml Buffalo Trace Bourbon bottle was discovered on the front passenger floor of the SUV.
Allen, with his noticeable level of impairment and corroborating witness testimony, was apprehended on charges of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). He was subsequently taken to the Indian River Jail for processing.
Further investigation revealed that Allen had a history of DUI charges and is currently on federal probation.
