Police arrested a man after he allegedly stole $288.86 in merchandise from Walmart in Sebastian. The incident occurred Saturday, February 4, 2023, at approximately 1:45 p.m.
A Walmart employee told law enforcement the suspect fled the store without paying. The man was last seen driving a red mustang and wearing a Batman mask.
As police were nearby, they stopped the vehicle at the intersection of US-1 and Jackson Street.
According to the affidavit, the suspect was identified as Jonah Goodfellow, 18, of Sebastian.
“Jonah uttered that he stole merchandise from Walmart,” the officer said.
Goodfellow, who told police he works as a Tax Return Preparer, admitted to being responsible for the theft at the store, the affidavit said.
He was charged with Retail Theft and transported to the Indian River County Jail, where his bond was set at $500.
It’s estimated that Walmart loses as much as $3 billion yearly due to shoplifting. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon recently told CNBC that theft is higher than it has historically been and feared customers could be negatively affected as prices could rise and stores could shut.
