The Sebastian Police Department arrested a man for attempting to steal about $1,000 in merchandise from Walmart, the affidavit said.
On Sunday at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Sebastian Walmart about a theft. A loss prevention officer had stopped the suspect after he pushed a shopping cart through the store exit without paying for the merchandise.
The officers watched a security video of the suspect, identified as Mark Yates of Sebastian, commit the theft. It showed Yates loading his cart full of merchandise from various departments, police said.
Yates, 50, told the officer that his mother paid for all the merchandise and had the receipt. While questioned, he asked to “call his mother to give him money to pay for the items.”
A background check showed Yates was on felony probation. The property recovered from the shopping cart totaled $998.59.
Yates is currently being held without bond at the Indian River County Jail.
