Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers told Sebastian Daily that deputies have a suspect in custody who allegedly robbed a Gifford Wawa at gunpoint early Sunday morning.
The incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. at the Wawa on the 4400 block of U.S. Highway 1. The suspect indicated to the clerk that he had a firearm and demanded cash. It is unclear at this time whether the suspect was actually armed.
Flowers said as of 10 a.m. Sunday, deputies and crime scene investigators were still on scene collecting evidence and reviewing surveillance footage.
Right after the incident, the suspect fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Deputies responded to the scene and, with assistance from the Real Time Crime Center, were able to quickly identify and detain a person of interest at a nearby residence.
No injuries were reported during the robbery. The investigation is ongoing.
