SEBASTIAN – Many people have noticed lately that golf carts are occupying the handicapped spaces in certain areas in Sebastian, particularly in the Winn-Dixie parking lot near Barefoot Bay.
This has been a topic of debate among residents because some carts don’t have a handicapped placard or indicator on them.
Regular vehicles that park in these spaces are required to have a placard hanging from the mirror, a decal, or a special handicapped license plate.
We decided to ask Commander John Blackledge of the Sebastian Police Department about this topic. Can golf carts use handicapped spaces at the grocery store? Do they need a handicap sticker?
“Yes and yes. If the golf cart is legal to get to that location, then they can use the handicapped with proper decal or tag,” Blackledge said.
Golf carts have to meet the same requirements as vehicles to occupy the handicapped spaces.
