SEBASTIAN – On Monday, the Sebastian Police Department responded to a call at the 500 block of Michael Street in reference to a stolen check.
The victims noticed that a check was stolen out of their Seacoast Bank checkbook and was forged in their name for $115.00. After speaking with the bank, it was discovered that a person living with them cashed the check.
Lisa A. Benefield, 39, walked into the Sebastian bank yesterday with the check and forged the victim’s signature. Police clearly saw that the signature on the check was noticeably different in comparison to the victim’s signature on file.
Officers spoke with Benefield, and she first said that the victim gave her permission to write the check. Then she told police that she cashed the check to buy prescription medication.
Benefield was arrested and transported to the Indian River County Jail where she was charged with felony utter forged or counterfeit bill and petit theft.
