For three decades, the Sebastian River High School Band Program has been a vibrant heartbeat of our community, fostering musical excellence and inspiring generations. This year, they celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Prism Concert, a dazzling display of creativity and collaboration that continues to amaze and uplift audiences.
A Visionary Beginning
Established by Dr. Carl Hancock, a visionary educator, the Sebastian River High School Band Program has emerged as one of Florida’s most distinguished high school music programs. Inspired by his experiences at the Florida State University School of Music, Dr. Hancock conceived the Prism Concert, a groundbreaking musical experience that seamlessly blends diverse musical performances. This unique format has captivated audiences since its inception and solidified the program’s reputation for excellence.
The Prism Concert has evolved over the years, always highlighting the incredible talents of our student musicians and dancers. From holiday favorites to original performances, the concert offers a platform for students to shine and create unforgettable memories. Despite changes in leadership and new generations of students, the Prism Concert has remained a beloved tradition that unites the school and the greater Sebastian community in celebration of the arts.
The enduring success of the band program is a testament to the outstanding leadership of its directors. Brandon T. Jenkins, the current Director of Bands, has brought his expertise and commitment to excellence to Sebastian River High School.
During his tenure at Heritage High School, he dramatically increased the band’s size. He elevated its performance level from “poor” to “superior”, earning the Florida Bandmasters Association’s (FBA) accolades, including the prestigious Tom Bishop Award. He was named Teacher of the Year for the entire Brevard Public School System.
The band nearly quadrupled in size and improved from “poor” to “superior” ratings at the Florida Bandmasters Association’s (FBA) Musical Performance Assessments (MPA).
In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Jenkins actively contributes to his church’s music program, sharing his musical gifts and passion as an integral worship team member. His ability to inspire students and community members underscores his dedication to fostering a love for music.
In addition, this year, the program also welcomes Ashley Sherwood as Associate Director of Bands. Ms. Sherwood’s impressive career, including performances at Carnegie Hall and with the University of Florida Symphony Orchestra, and her dedication to music education make her a valuable addition to the team. Her percussion expertise and involvement in prestigious organizations like the Florida Bandmasters Association will enhance the program’s offerings. Together, Mr. Jenkins and Ms. Sherwood form a dynamic leadership team poised to guide the band program into its next chapter.
The 30th Prism Concert is more than just a milestone; it’s a celebration of the students, educators, families, and community members who have supported the band program over the years. At its core, the band program embodies the spirit of family: helping each other, lifting each other, staying positive, and growing together. Those who uphold these values are deeply appreciated and thanked for their contributions to the program’s success.
The concert serves as a reminder of the transformative power of music and its ability to bring people together. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the program’s rich history and look for a bright future.

The Sebastian River High School Band Program, a legacy of visionary leadership and unwavering dedication, inspires and uplifts our community. From Dr. Carl Hancock to the dynamic duo of Brandon T.
