The Sebastian Charter Junior High (SCJH) Choir has earned a Superior rating at its inaugural Music Performance Assessment (MPA), held at Jensen Beach High School.
“We had a tremendous day at the Music Performance Assessment,” SCJH Choir Director Ethan Kinkle told Sebastian Daily.
The MPA, organized by the Florida Vocal Association (FVA)—a branch of the Florida Music Education Association—is a cornerstone of choral education in the state. It brings together choirs, ensembles, and soloists from secondary schools to perform for expert adjudicators who provide constructive feedback.
The goal? To elevate musical standards and inspire growth among young performers and their directors.
“I am so proud of our SCJH choir students and Mr. Kinkle,” SCJH Principal Dr. Bill Dodds told Sebastian Daily. “They have worked extremely hard to build a program from scratch in just seven months. Their accomplishments and recognition are well-deserved, and I look forward to all they will do in the future.”
At the Choral Concert MPA, participating choirs perform two to three memorized pieces before a panel of judges, followed by a sight-reading evaluation. Ratings range from Superior—the highest honor—to Poor, based on a detailed rubric.
The FVA oversees two key MPA events annually, which are the Solo & Ensemble MPA, and the Choral Concert MPA.
