Storm Grove Middle School (SGMS) just completed its first competitive cheer season, over the weekend, at ESPN Wide World of Sports UCA Nationals.

SGMS cheerleading earned their bid to nationals for their game day routine alongside only two other middle schools in Florida. After such a successful first season, they have their eyes on Nationals next year. They are ready to make history again with new goals in sight.

The team earned their bid in December at the Florida Central Regionals, where Gifford Middle, coached by Anessia Rodriguez, and Storm Grove Middle, coached by Chelsea Norris, made history as the first, middle school competitive cheer programs participating in UCA for Indian River County. Coach Rodriguez and Coach Norris are thrilled to be able to bring a new level of cheerleading to our area’s middle schools.

Congratulations, Stingrays, on your historic season! Keep setting the bar high for future athletes to follow.

While STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, SGMS focuses on the whole student, so they created a play on words with STEAM, including Social Skills, Teamwork, Environment, Accountable and Mindful.

UCA Nationals

For more than 35 years, the UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship have been the season’s culmination for cheerleaders and dancers across the country.

It’s the most prestigious collegiate national championship in the country and the perfect opportunity for cheerleading and dance teams to get together and celebrate each other at the Walt Disney World Resort. The Sebastian River High School also competed in the UCA Nationals this year.
