Three Sebastian schools – Sebastian Elementary, Sebastian River Middle, and Sebastian River High – have been honored with the Purple Star designation for their exceptional support of military families.
Governor Ron DeSantis recognized these schools and 175 others across Florida for their commitment to providing vital resources and programs to military families.
The designation, which lasts three years, highlights the schools’ efforts to create a welcoming and supportive environment for military-connected students.
To achieve the Florida Purple Star School of Distinction, schools must meet the following requirements:
- Dedicated Military Liaison: Have a designated point of contact to assist military families.
- Military-Friendly Website: Maintain a school webpage with resources tailored to military students and families, including academic and transition planning.
- Student-Led Transition Program: Implement a program to support incoming military students.
- Staff Training: Provide professional development for staff to address the unique needs of military families.
- Open Enrollment: Reserve at least 5% of open enrollment seats for military students.
- Military-Focused Initiatives: Participate in three of the following:
- Service projects connecting the school with the military community
- Annual military recognition events
- JROTC programs
Nearly 400 schools statewide have earned the Purple Star Schools of Distinction designation.
