A 40-year-old woman was struck by a Brightline train in Vero Beach on Thursday evening.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) received a report of the collision at approximately 6:04 p.m. at the 12th Street railroad crossing, located between US Highway 1 and Old Dixie Highway in Vero Beach.

The woman sustained a severe arm injury. According to a sheriff’s office spokesman, she appeared to be homeless.

No one aboard the Brightline train was injured.

The Indian River County Fire Rescue crew (from fire station #1) administered patient care. The injured woman was subsequently transported to a trauma center via helicopter.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the IRCSO and railroad officials. There were no reported road closures as a result of the incident.
