The National Weather Service (NWS) warns about extreme heat on Wednesday. They expect the heat index in Sebastian, Fellsmere, and Vero Beach to reach between 107 and 112 degrees.
NWS could issue more heat advisories on Thursday and Friday. The actual temperatures will be near 93 degrees. The winds will be blowing from the southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour until Sunday.
The NWS also encourages everyone not to leave young kids or pets alone in cars. If you’re planning to be outside, be aware that the hot temperatures and high humidity can make you sick from the heat.
Drink lots of water and avoid staying in the sun for too long. It’s also a good idea to check on your relatives and neighbors.
Heat Exhaustion
It’s essential to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Try to wear light, loose clothes if you can. If you must work outside, take regular breaks in a cool or shaded place, as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration suggested.
If someone seems to be having problems because of the heat, move them to a cool and shaded place. Remember, heat stroke is a serious emergency! Always call 911.
Thunderstorms
Besides the heat warning, the NWS also said there might be a lot of rain and thunderstorms today, especially west of I-95 near Fellsmere. We can expect some afternoon thunderstorms in Sebastian.
The chance of thunderstorms will increase to 70 percent on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Wind gusts could get as fast as 45 miles per hour during these storms.
